LIMITED PERSON TO PERSON TRANSMISSION OF H5N1

Previous reports of clusters of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus have suggested limited person-to-person transmission, however the study oc contact has been restricted. Now a study in China has shown probable close-family transmission but none among extended contacts.
In December 2007, a 24-year-old man caught avian influenza and died. He has visited a
poultry market six days prior to the onset of the illness. His father, who was in close contact with him, developed H5N1 avian influenza but recovered after intensive treatment. A total of 91 close contact of either-father or son, or both, were studied. Seventy-eight (86%) of this contact received prophylaxis with oseltamivir and two had mild illness. These two were tested for H5N1 by RT PCR and were negative. All 91 close contacts were serologically negative for H5N1. The two cases, father and son, had the same virus on genomic sequencing. The disease appears to have been transmitted from son to father but not to any of the 91 other contacts studies. (Source : Medical Progress, Vol.35 No.8)
